I started using a friends Mavica -88 and I now have a Sony Mavika FD 91. I love it. I have taken over 4000 pictures with it so far.  Depending what you want to do with the images you an get 10-20 images per floppy disk. I use mine on the internet and not for printing so the lower resolution adjustment works fine. And disks are cheep. And if your computer memory is full , a great place to store the pictures. At least until the memory sticks are cheaper or we all have writeable CD's.

I also like the floppys as they are redily available and easily given to others who want a copy of images you just took at a gathering without a computer to make the copies. The Mavica makes copies!

My main reason for getting the Sony is the optics were the best I found. The lens opening is the largest available (in a non professional model) and brings in more light.  Mine can focus to .01 inch. I actually touch the flowers I photograph. I also find being able to turn off the automatic focus when I want, is a big help too. Especially with photographing lace and other flat items or busy ones where I want to focus on only one of the items (like one ornament on a Christmas tree).
A big help in digital photography is enough light. These cameras are like camcorders in that they can take a picture in low light but it will be grainier than ones taken in sufficient light. This is why the larger lens will give better results.

PHOTO TIP: For closeup inside shots like the one on the left. Set up a place near a natural source of light like a window where the light filters in. This gives enough light to take the picture without a flash and allows dramatic shadows. Most closeups cannot be taken with a flash.

There are a lot of good digital cameras. Most are good for family use but if you plan to take lots of closeup work like I do then fewer cameras fit the bill. Macro lens is critical for closeups.

PHOTO TIP: To create black backgrounds when photgraphing flowers...I usually cut a hole on black paper and insert it behind the flower. (see right)
